TUMBLER RIDGE – The BC Wildfire Service will support the District of Tumbler Ridge in conducting a prescribed burn within the community, covering up to 16 hectares.
The burn unit is located northwest of Highway 29 and north of Flatbed Creek, near the Lions Flatbed Creek Campground. In the interest of public safety, trails in the area will be closed during burn operations. Please respect trail closure flagging and signage.
Preparation is underway this week, with crews establishing control lines, assessing burn conditions and mitigating hazards such as danger trees ahead of ignition.
The exact timing of this burn will depend on weather and site conditions, but it could begin as early as May 14. Burning will proceed if conditions are suitable and allow for smoke dispersal during burn operations, though smoke may linger in the following days.
Key goals of this prescribed burn include:
- Biodiversity enhancement
- Reducing build-up of dead and combustible material
- Removing forest fuels to reduce the long-term risk of wildfire
Safety is paramount in all prescribed burn operations. Each burn is guided by a detailed burn plan that defines objectives and outlines key requirements, including weather and fuel conditions, personnel and equipment needs, mitigation measures and post-fire monitoring.
