Wildfire risk reduction project planned for the Enterprise Forest Service Road

100 MILE HOUSE –100 Mile House Natural Resource District and BC Wildfire Service will be working in collaboration with the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation to build a 120-hectare fuel break adjacent to the Enterprise Forest Service Road (FSR) as part of a wildfire risk reduction project.

When and where

  • Work is expected to begin as early as mid-November and may continue through to March 31, 2027.
  • The Enterprise Landscape Fuel Break will be adjacent to the Enterprise FSR, between kilometre 11 and 45, approximately 22 kilometres south of Chimney Lake and 25 kilometres southwest of Lac La Hache.

What to expect

  • Chainsaw and mechanical noise will be heard during the contract.
  • Crews will maintain a secure worksite using posted signs with check-in procedures.
  • Crews will selectively remove dead overstory trees through falling and bucking operations.
  • Larger logs will be left on site as coarse woody debris.
  • Understory trees that contribute to ladder fuels will be selectively thinned, and lower branches on retained trees will be pruned to reduce the potential for fire to spread into the forest canopy.
  • Surface fuels will be treated through a combination of grinding and pile burning to reduce overall fuel loading. Ground material will be transported off site for reuse.
  • Treatments will be completed using both hand and mechanical methods.

Key goals of this wildfire mitigation project include:

  • Reducing forest fuel loads to help mitigate wildfire risk.
  • Providing a strategic location for wildfire suppression activities.
  • Promoting a more resilient forest that is less susceptible to wildfire.
