How many people live with you at home?

Answer the following questions to further customize your home emergency plan.

If you haven’t already, complete a self assessment on your property using the Home Ignition Zone Self Assessment, or schedule an assessment with one of your Local Fire Smart Representatives or Wildfire Mitigation Specialists.

Focus on the Immediate Zone:
• Removing debris from gutters and roof area
• Move firewood and other combustibles away from your home, ideally 10 metres or more away

In the Intermediate Zone:
• Cut grass to 10cm
• Remove cedar hedges, junipers and other highly flammable shrubs
• Promote deciduous vegetation and ensure surface vegetation is minimal

If your property extends into the Extended Zone:
• Ensure coniferous trees are mitigated by limbing branches up 2 metres and strategically removing trees to break up tree density
• Remove heavy accumulation of surface vegetation

If you need immediate assistance from the police, fire or ambulance call 9-1-1. Only call 9-1-1 to report serious injuries. If you live in an area where 9-1-1 is not available, list your local emergency number(s) below:

Contact your community’s Emergency Management Program to find out how it will share alerts and instructions during an emergency, whether it’s by social media, mobile alerts, sirens, radio or television. The people you live with may not be together following an emergency. Make it easier to find each other by choosing emergency meeting places ahead of time.

Emergencies can happen anytime, including during work, school or volunteering. List the contact information of everyone you live with who are away from home regularly.

List the contact information for each school attended by the people you live with, including pre-schools and after-school programs. Check with your child(ren)’s school about how they will communicate during an emergency and what type of authorization they require to release your child(ren) to your designated person if you are unable.

During an emergency, the most immediate help will come from those around you – your neighbours. Connecting and building relationships with them will mean a better response. List their contact information here and discuss what skills or resources they have that might be of use in an emergency, such as first-aid training.

List the health number and medical needs, like medications or medical conditions, of everyone you live with.

List the contact information of your healthcare providers, such as a doctor or pharmacist. If you take prescription medication(s), talk to your doctor or pharmacist about keeping an extra supply in your emergency kit and grab-and-go bags.

All standard homeowner’s and tenant’s insurance policies cover the cost of alternative accommodations and living expenses for people who are prohibited from returning home due to an Evacuation Order. Make sure your insurance policy is up to date. It may be difficult to obtain or renew homeowner’s and tenant’s insurance once there is a wildfire in your region.
