Don’t sweat the unexpected: preparedness tips for summer travellers

Summer is right around the corner which means it’s time to prepare for weekend adventures and longer road trips to visit family and friends. Whether you plan to stay local or explore other areas of B.C., make sure you’re ready for changing conditions.

Trip essentials

Keep the focus on fun by planning ahead for potential emergencies on the road.

  • Make an emergency plan so you have all your important information, such as emergency contacts, and home, travel and insurance information all in one place. Keep your loved ones informed of where you’re going and when you plan to return.
  • Pack a grab-and-go bag for your car. Make sure to include extra food and water to help you stay nourished and hydrated in case of an unexpected road closure.
  • Prepare to keep your pets safe. If they are travelling with you, pack a grab-and-go bag for them too. If they are staying at home while you are away, make sure you have a plan for someone to care for them in case of an emergency or if your return is delayed.

Stay safe on the roads

Remember it’s about the journey, not the destination. Add extra driving time into your trip plan so you don’t feel rushed. Visit the Rest Area website for a map and details on what each site offers. Never leave people or pets alone in a parked vehicle.

If you see a wildfire, report it through the BC Wildfire Service app or by calling 1-800-663-5555 or *5555.
