Strong winds forecast for Northwest Fire Centre

SMITHERS – The Northwest Fire Centre is forecast to see increased wind as a result of a cold front, which is predicted to push east into the fire centre overnight Thursday and pass through by Friday at noon.

In the Bulkley and Nadina Fire Zones, west to southwest winds of 45 to 50 kph and gusts up to 70 kph are expected on Friday, Sept. 15, lasting one to two hours. Winds of 20 to 30 kph with gusts up to 50 kph are predicted to follow. All wind is forecast to diminish by sunset. Temperatures are forecast to reach a high of 15 degrees and minimum relative humidity levels are forecast to range between 45 and 50 per cent.

On Sunday, Sept. 17, another period of exceptionally strong winds with gusts up to 70 kph are expected in the afternoon and evening and will impact most of the Northwest Fire Centre. This wind is expected to be accompanied by cold, damp conditions for most areas but little or no precipitation is expected for the Nadina Fire Zone.

With these increased winds, residents can expect to see increased smoke and activity coming from existing fires. Personnel and other resources remain on-site on wildfires throughout the Northwest Fire Centre and additional resources are available on stand-by should they be required.
