Smoke from pile burning near Greyback reservoir will be visible to nearby communities

PENTICTON – The BC Wildfire Service will be supporting the Ministry of Environment and Parks in completing a fuel management project located approximately 15 kilometres northeast of Penticton. The purpose of this project is to reduce wildfire hazards by reducing accumulations of fuels (e.g., tree limbs, woody debris, organic material) from previous rehabilitation work in the area. Crews will be working to burn approximately 40 piles.

Key goals of this fuel management project include:

  • wildfire risk reduction
  • removing forest fuels to reduce the long-term risk of wildfire

The exact timing of this burn will depend on weather and site conditions, but it could begin as early as Tuesday, October 14, 2026. Burning will proceed if conditions are suitable and allow for smoke dispersal during burn operations, though smoke may also linger in the following days.

Smoke may be visible from Penticton, Summerland, Peachland and surrounding areas, as well as to motorists traveling along Highway 97.
