Pile burning around Smithers

SMITHERS – Pile burning will take place at the Bulkley Valley Nordic Centre as a part of multiple projects BC Wildfire Service has been supporting. These projects include wildfire risk reduction, adventure trail expansion and the removal of danger trees on identified trails.

Completing these projects will help to reduce the risk of wildfire around the Nordic Centre lodge and biathlon course, as well as improve community enjoyment and safety while using the trails. Pile burning will clean up the branches, debris and other potential fuels created as a result of these projects.

Burning will commence on any day that the venting forecast is good or fair, between September 14 to November 30, 2026, or until all of the required burning is completed. Smoke will likely be visible from surrounding areas and may also be visible along Highway 16 as well as from the communities of Telkwa and Smithers.
