Off-road vehicle prohibition for parts of Coastal Fire Centre



PARKSVILLE – Effective immediately, off-road vehicles (ORV) will be prohibited in select areas of the Coastal Fire Centre’s jurisdiction. This prohibition is being implemented in the interest of public safety given the scope and scale of fires currently burning in B.C. and the elevated danger ratings in many southern regions of the province.

This ORV prohibition applies to Crown land within the following fire zones and associated natural resource districts:

  • South Island Fire Zone, which includes a portion of the South Island Natural Resource District
  • Pemberton Fire Zone, which encompasses the Sea to Sky Natural Resource District
  • Fraser Fire Zone (excluding Haida Gwaii), which encompasses the Chilliwack Natural Resource District

As of 12 p.m. (noon) PDT on August 10, 2026, the operation of any ORV for recreational purposes on Crown land will be prohibited, and all on-highway vehicles must remain on road surfaces as defined in theForest Planning and Practices Regulation.

The prohibition applies to off-road vehicles as defined in the Off-Road Vehicle Act and section 2 (a) of the Off-Road Vehicle Regulation:

  • all-terrain vehicles
  • motorcycles
  • off-road side-by-side vehicles

This prohibition applies to all Crown land that is outside of municipal boundaries. It also applied to the following types of land within municipal boundaries:

  • Private managed forest land (Private Managed Forest Land Act)
  • Parks, conservancies and recreation areas (Park Act)
  • Recreation sites, recreation trails, interpretive forest sites and trail-based recreation areas (Forest and Range Practices Act)
  • Ecological reserves (Ecological Reserve Act)
  • Wildlife management areas (Wildlife Act)

This ORV prohibition does not apply to emergency response, agriculture or commercial/industrial users who operate off-road vehicles for farming or business purposes. It also does not apply to individuals who are customers of and remain in the presence of a commercial/industrial user operating an ORV for business purposes.

This prohibition will remain in place until 12 p.m. (noon) PDT on Oct. 9, 2026, or until the order is rescinded. The BC Wildfire Service is continually monitoring conditions, and this prohibition may be expanded or rescinded as needed.
