LILLOOET – The BC Wildfire Service will be supporting Xwísten in conducting a pile burning project about 9.5 kilometres down the Blackhills Forest Service Road (FSR) and approximately 13 kilometres north of Lillooet. Up to 30 piles will be burnt for this project.
Key goals of the pile burning include:
- helping to restore forest health and a properly functioning ecosystem
- reduce wildfire hazards by reducing accumulations of fuels (e.g., tree limbs, woody debris, organic material)
- providing critical chainsaw training opportunities for wildfire ground crews
Smoke may be visible from Pavillion, Fountain Indian Reserve, Lillooet and surrounding areas.
The exact timing of this work will depend on weather and site conditions, but it could begin as early as Thursday, Oct 15. Burning will proceed if conditions are suitable and allow for smoke dispersal during burn operations, though smoke may also linger in the following days.
