Conditions were made worse by rapid melting of a snowpack that was almost two and a half times the average for early May. As a result, thousands of people in Grand Forks and the Boundary region were forced to evacuate, with homes, businesses, livelihoods and critical infrastructure lost or damaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-1 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\" style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;padding-top:0;padding-bottom:0\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Flood Mitigation in Grand Forks\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RBKDIc9ObMI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"padding-top:0;padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);padding-bottom:0;padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10)\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0;margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);margin-bottom:0;margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-top:0;padding-bottom:0\">Since then, the City of Grand Forks has undertaken extensive flood-mitigation work to help prevent a similar event in the future. The Province has provided more than $44 million in investment since 2018 to support projects to help flood recovery and mitigation in Grand Forks and the surrounding areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20)\">The City\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grandforks.ca\/fmp\/\">Flood Mitigation Program<\/a> is now more than 75 per cent complete, and includes a new dike and drainage system, the installation of fish habitat structures and the planting of 45,000 trees and shrubs along the Kettle River channel banks and riparian areas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-top:0;padding-bottom:0\">The program reduces flood risk by protecting the city\u2019s core neighbourhoods, businesses, industries and critical infrastructure, while restoring nine hectares of floodplain to create important room for the river to flood, which already proved itself during the 2023 freshet season when new flood defences protected houses and businesses from damaging floodwaters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-2 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\" style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;padding-top:0;padding-bottom:0\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20)\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;padding-top:0;padding-bottom:0\">In addition, it has helped to meet requirements to restore habitats impacted by dike construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jennifer Wetmore, who now works for Community Futures BC, was the team lead for economic recovery during the flooding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to us in 2018 wasn\u2019t easy, but we\u2019ve come a long way,\u201d said Wetmore. \u201cWe leaned on each other, we supported each other, and we\u2019ve been incredibly fortunate to have the level of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ubcm.ca\/cepf\/emergency-operations-centres-equipment-and-training\">support we\u2019ve received from the Province<\/a> and from the federal government.
