Even five minutes without power can feel like a long time without&nbsp;internet or lights, while worrying about the food in the fridge we don\u2019t want going to waste.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keeping in mind that power outages can happen at any time of the year, do future you a favor and be prepared. By <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/safety\/emergency-management\/preparedbc\/make-your-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">making an emergency plan<\/a> and having an <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/safety\/emergency-management\/preparedbc\/build-an-emergency-kit-and-grab-and-go-bag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emergency kit<\/a> ready to go, you\u2019ll know how to communicate with loved ones, and you\u2019ll even have a flashlight to help guide your way in the dark.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since power outages are quite common and electricity is all around us, let\u2019s build on our emergency plan and answer some common power outage safety questions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-1 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\">If you see a downed power line, stay back and call 9-1-1<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10)\">Downed power lines are dangerous and are considered an emergency. Call 9-1-1 to report it. Stay back at least 10 metres (the length of a city bus) until help arrives. Never touch or try to move a downed power line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-brand-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-864d9c3d9de560d500981410dc644a45\"><strong><strong>Keep your fridge and freezer closed<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\">Avoid sneaking midnight snacks during a power outage. Keep the doors closed! A full fridge can keep food cold for around four hours, and a full freezer can keep frozen food for up to 48 hours.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-213eacb1aa93b3ed81816d3110d3f6ee\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\">If you know your power will be out for a long time, ask a friend if they can store your food safely until your power comes back on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-brand-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-51bfc4df67c779898a1cbcf5b0200cc7\"><strong>Be aware of carbon monoxide poisoning<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.technicalsafetybc.ca\/how-identify-symptoms-carbon-monoxide-poisoning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carbon monoxide (CO) is a toxic gas that you can\u2019t see or smell, which can be harmful if you are exposed to it.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\">In the event of a power outage, never heat your home with a gas stovetop or oven. Never use a camp stove, barbeque or propane or kerosene heater indoors. Gas-powered generators and grills should only be used outdoors and away from windows.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\">To keep warm, layer up with clothes or ask a friend or family member with power if you can stay with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-brand-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9c9fec66f870b41adcaac9d0bb2a7a16\"><strong>How long will the power be out?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);padding-bottom:0\">The ultimate question!
