{"id":11042,"date":"2025-01-30T09:10:01","date_gmt":"2025-01-30T17:10:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.gov.bc.ca\/emergencymanagement\/?p=11042"},"modified":"2025-01-31T11:23:00","modified_gmt":"2025-01-31T19:23:00","slug":"community-spotlight-naturekids-bc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.gov.bc.ca\/emergencymanagement\/community-spotlight-naturekids-bc\/","title":{"rendered":"Community Spotlight: taking environmental action with NatureKids BC"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Community Spotlight series highlights communities, organizations and individuals who are taking innovative actions to help build resilient communities. <a href=\"https:\/\/naturekidsbc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NatureKids BC<\/a> helps families build a sense of belonging, confidence and safety in nature through their mission to encourage families to spend more time outside.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-1 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Build relationships with people and places in your community<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With local leaders guiding the way, NatureKids BC offers <a href=\"https:\/\/naturekidsbc.ca\/explorer-days\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">free, outdoor experiences<\/a> to help participants build a relationship with the natural environment right in their backyard. There are currently <a href=\"https:\/\/naturekidsbc.ca\/find-a-club\/\" title=\"\">30 local NatureKids clubs across B.C<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rebecca Law, NatureKids BC\u2019s executive director, is passionate about the outdoors and making local connections. She has fond memories of spending time in Cathedral Grove (MacMillan Park) with her family, and it always reminds her of the \u201cbigness of nature.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NatureKids BC programs introduce participants to their area\u2019s natural history, watersheds, forests, parks and wildlife. Rebecca points out that the programs are \u201ca great opportunity to see migration patterns, new and changing habitats and wildlife in your neighbourhood.\u201d These connections and observations help participants discover seasonal changes close to home, providing important local knowledge that can be useful for emergency preparedness and climate action too.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Connections to emergency preparedness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.preparedbc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PreparedBC<\/a> joined the North Vancouver NatureKids club for their first <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/safety\/emergency-management\/education-programs-toolkits\/high-ground-hike\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">High Ground Hike<\/a> in April and then later in December, explored a local river park to learn about <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/safety\/emergency-management\/preparedbc\/know-your-hazards\/severe-weather\/storms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">winter storm<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/safety\/emergency-management\/preparedbc\/know-your-hazards\/floods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">flood preparedness<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NatureKids BC has also hosted events with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/story.php\/?story_fbid=865686702440456&amp;id=100069974035787&amp;_rdr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FireSmart BC<\/a>, led outdoor workshops about avalanche preparedness, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/environment\/air-land-water\/water\/drought-flooding-dikes-dams\/river-forecast-centre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">River Forecast Centre<\/a> has been featured in their <a href=\"https:\/\/naturekidsbc.ca\/be-a-naturekid\/naturewild\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NatureWILD magazine<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Get involved and share your knowledge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>NatureKids BC is a fun and interactive way to engage with kids and families about their natural environment, local hazards and how to prepare for and adapt to a changing climate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Find your <a href=\"https:\/\/naturekidsbc.ca\/find-a-club\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">local NatureKids Club<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Contact your <a href=\"https:\/\/naturekidsbc.ca\/find-a-club\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">local NatureKids Club<\/a> about being a guest speaker and sharing your knowledge about the natural world or emergency management.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Join an <a href=\"https:\/\/naturekidsbc.ca\/explorer-days\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Explorer Day<\/a> with your family.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/naturekidsbc.ca\/join-our-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Volunteer<\/a> as a local leader.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\"   data-print-width=\"25\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.gov.bc.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/923\/2025\/01\/ure-Kids-Instagram-Post-3-1-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"3 young kids kneeling on the ground in the snow.
