Access Zones Activated Around K–12 Schools
This week, access zones around K–12 schools have been established through the Safe Access to Schools Regulation to preserve safe access to education by protecting students, staff and families from disruptive and harmful protest activities at schools.
Access zones were first established in May 2024 and again in September 2024 for the 2024‑25 school year, under the Safe Access to Schools Act. This Act gives Government the ability to establish access zones around K–12 schools through regulation.
Access zones are now in place at K–12 schools and police can arrest or ticket anyone found impeding access, disrupting or interfering with educational activities or attempting to intimidate an individual within 20 metres (66 feet) of school property. These zones are in effect on school days from 7 am to 6 pm and during extracurricular school activities at all of BC’s K–12 public and independent schools, with limited exceptions.
Be sure to follow school district safety protocols in the event of an incident or disruption. After an incident has occurred, please share incidents of protests or disruptive behaviours or activities with ecc.strategicpriorities@gov.bc.ca.

New Curriculum Elaborations for Physical and Health Education 10
With the start of the 2025–26 school year, the Ministry of Education and Child Care has worked with community organizations and education partners to develop supporting elaborations for the expanded learning standard requiring CPR and AED learning in the Physical and Health Education (PHE) 10 curriculum. While not mandated, these elaborations support teachers by providing suggested guidance through example topics and ideas that can help teachers implement the expanded learning standard. Teachers are encouraged to use the elaborations as they see best for their classrooms and instructional delivery.

2025–26 Annual Compliance Audit Notification
Consistent with past years, funding recoveries are expanded to include full-time equivalent student (FTEs) outside of the audit sample where the auditors identify a clear link between audit findings in their sample and those FTEs outside the sample.
The procedures the auditors are using this school year can be found on the 2025–26 Compliance Audit web page. Please share this information with your schools and staff as appropriate.
The ministry is reviewing enrolment and other relevant data to select school districts for this year’s program including:
- A review of past years’ audit reports to identify school districts that may benefit from a follow-up audit.
Student attendance records and participation documentation must be retained for each Form 1701 data collection reporting period to assist in the enrolment audit process. The recommended retention documentation for your Level 1 District Data team members can be found on the Compliance Program web page.
If your district is selected for an audit, a letter of notification will be sent to the Superintendent of Schools in November 2025. Any modifications to the audit process will be communicated to districts that have been selected for audit.
The ministry recognizes the additional effort required of your staff to facilitate this process and thanks you for your cooperation. If you have any questions, please contact Kalitta Opoku, Compliance Program Lead, at 236-478-2173 or Kalitta.Opoku@gov.bc.ca.
