Youth Work in Trades Award Redesign Update

The Ministry of Education and Child Care and SkilledTradesBC are redesigning the Youth Work in Trades Award to support students continuing in post-secondary trades training programs. The transition from the existing Youth Work in Trades Award to a redesigned Youth Work in Trades Scholarship will commence on July 1, 2024.

On July 1, 2024, the Youth Work in Trades Award will transition to an application-based scholarship that can be used towards the costs of tuition and mandatory fees for a post-secondary trades training program. Students registered with SkilledTradesBC for the Youth Work in Trades program prior to June 30, 2024 will have their eligibility assessed on the award program’s original conditions. Students who register with SkilledTradesBC for the Youth Work in Trades program on or after July 1, 2024 will be assessed for the Youth Work in Trades Scholarship using the revised conditions.

The redesigned Youth Work in Trades Scholarship will:

  • Require students to apply using a web-based application (open annually from September 1 to November 15), and submit information about their anticipated financial need
  • Provide eligible students with $1,000 credit to offset the costs of tuition and mandatory fees for a post-secondary trades training program
  • Cap the number of scholarships awarded annually at 600 *
  • Have a three-year redemption period

*Note: If the number of applicants exceeds 600 annually, the adjudication team will prioritize students based on demonstrated financial need.

To be considered for the Youth Work in Trades Scholarship, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Canadian citizens or permanent residents
  • Registered with SkilledTradesBC for the Youth Work in Trades program
  • Completed all four Youth Work in Trades courses while still school-aged: WRK 11A and 11B, WRK 12A and 12B
  • Earned a minimum C+ in each Grade 12 numbered course
  • Achieved a Dogwood Diploma or an Adult Dogwood
  • Completed 900 hours of work-based training on or before August 31*

*Note: student age and funding eligibility rules apply.
