Premier David Eby has declared tomorrow, Friday, May 2, 2025, an official day of remembrance and mourning for the victims of the Lapu Lapu tragedy, providing the people of British Columbia an opportunity to come together, grieve the loss of innocent lives and recognize the contributions the victims made to their communities and the province. An online book of condolences for the victims’ families is available for signing until the end of day on Monday, May 5. I also encourage you to share this Guidance for Acknowledging the Provincial Day of Remembrance and Mourning document with your schools to assist them in their planning for this day of remembrance.
Pursuant to Section 12(a) of the British Columbia policy on half-masting, flags will continue to be flown at half-mast until sunset on Sunday, May 4, 2025, to mark the tragic deaths that occurred as a result of the attack. The direction of the Province on half-masting protocols is provided in case school districts wish to follow a similar approach; however, school districts have the autonomy to follow their own policies with regard to flags subject to the School Regulation.
Flags can be returned to full mast on Monday morning, May 5, when school resumes.
