With final report cards approaching for the 2023/24 school year, please note key information about the IE letter grade.
The “IE” reporting symbol informs parents and caregivers when students, for various reasons, have provided insufficient evidence of learning (according to the Learning Standards of the Provincial Curriculum). The symbol indicates that the student still wants the opportunity to show further evidence of learning.
The “IE” symbol:
- Can be used in grades K-12
- Is temporary and must be converted to another letter grade or scale indicator within one calendar year (or a shorter duration as decided by the teacher or principal)
- May be subject to local policy requiring conversion before the end of a school year or semester, meaning it cannot carry over to the following year
- May carry over to the following school year if decided by the teacher or principal. However, an agreed-upon plan must be in place specifying who (e.g. the teacher or principal) is responsible for the conversion
- Is not an entitlement for students or parents and caregivers. Another reporting symbol, including an F, may be used instead
More information regarding the use of IE is available in the K-12 Student Reporting Guidelines document.
