British Columbia saw very limited precipitation during what is typically a wet month. With very limited moisture, drought conditions in forests were much higher than normal for the late fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The elevated drought codes in certain regions, namely the Kamloops Fire Centre, the Rocky Mountain Trench, the Peace Region, and southern portions of the Cariboo, have carried over into spring 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recent burning conditions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The BC Wildfire Service has observed unusually advanced fire behaviour for this time of year as a result of the current drought conditions and the public should know the majority of spring wildfires are caused by people and are therefore preventable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last spring wildfire season (April 1 \u2013 June 30, 2022) there were a total of 135 wildfires. 99 per cent of these were human-caused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is compared to the summer\/fall wildfire season (July 1 \u2013 Dec 1, 2022), which included 1,569 wildfire ignitions; 25 per cent of these were human-caused and 74 per cent were naturally caused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:37px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" data-id=\"5838\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.gov.bc.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2023\/04\/PWSU-charts-graphs_slide2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5838\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.gov.bc.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2023\/04\/PWSU-charts-graphs_slide2.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/blog.gov.bc.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2023\/04\/PWSU-charts-graphs_slide2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.gov.bc.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2023\/04\/PWSU-charts-graphs_slide2-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.gov.bc.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2023\/04\/PWSU-charts-graphs_slide2-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" data-id=\"5833\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.gov.bc.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2023\/04\/PWSU-charts-graphs_slide3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5833\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.gov.bc.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2023\/04\/PWSU-charts-graphs_slide3.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/blog.gov.bc.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2023\/04\/PWSU-charts-graphs_slide3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.gov.bc.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2023\/04\/PWSU-charts-graphs_slide3-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.gov.bc.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2023\/04\/PWSU-charts-graphs_slide3-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/figure>\n<figcaption class=\"blocks-gallery-caption wp-element-caption\">Left: 99 per cent human-caused; 0 per cent natural; 1 per cent undetermined<br>Right: 25 per cent human-caused; 74 per cent natural; less than 0 per cent undetermined<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:31px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In early spring, most escaped open burns have one or both of the following factors in common:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the burn has been left unattended (even for a very short duration)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sudden changes in wind speed and direction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to conduct a safe and successful burn:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ensure an open burn is never left unattended<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>use free weather forecast tools such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spotwx.com\/\">www.spotwx.com<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.windy.com\/?50.544,-120.094,5\">windy.com<\/a> (this includes local wind speeds and direction, and provides more detail than high-level weather forecasts \u2013 there is also a layer for windy.com data available in our mobile app)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>check the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.env.gov.bc.ca\/epd\/epdpa\/venting\/\">venting index<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Fires may burn deeper and for longer periods in areas where drought conditions have persisted from the fall of 2022. As a result it is common for grass fires to ignite and spread quickly in early spring.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Watch Matt MacDonald, lead fire weather forecaster for the BC Wildfire Service deliver a brief presentation on the spring wildfire outlook. Coast and portions of the Kootenays. If conducted irresponsibly or in unsafe conditions, the potential of a human-caused wildfire increases. Human-caused wildfires are completely preventable.
