{"id":3132,"date":"2022-08-14T14:23:51","date_gmt":"2022-08-14T21:23:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.gov.bc.ca\/bcwildfire\/?p=3132"},"modified":"2022-08-14T14:23:51","modified_gmt":"2022-08-14T21:23:51","slug":"wildfire-week-in-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.gov.bc.ca\/bcwildfire\/wildfire-week-in-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Wildfire week in review"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This week the province of B.C. experienced sustained daily lightning activity, leading to an increase in new wildfire starts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the BC Wildfire Service prepares for weather like this there is always a regional focus on initial attack capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Initial attack is a phase of wildfire response from an initial report through to the first aviation and ground crew responses. Information provided in an initial report helps operational staff determine what resources to send to a fire. Considering this, resources were strategically placed throughout the province based largely on where lightning was forecast and the receptiveness of local fuels to ignition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The multi-day lightning event began on Wednesday with more than 800 lightning strikes hitting the west coast of Vancouver Island in the morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From Wednesday evening through to Friday lightning continued in the central interior and over to the southeast corner of B.C. On Saturday the weather moved northeast, with 14,000 lightning strikes in the Prince George Fire Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Across the province:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Wednesday: 4,018 lightning strikes<\/li><li>Thursday: 5,205 lightning strikes<\/li><li>Friday: 8,607 lightning strikes<\/li><li>Saturday: 17,684 lightning strikes<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.gov.bc.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2022\/08\/Lightning-strokes-Aug-10-13-1024x897.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3142\" width=\"615\" height=\"538\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.gov.bc.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2022\/08\/Lightning-strokes-Aug-10-13-1024x897.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.gov.bc.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2022\/08\/Lightning-strokes-Aug-10-13-300x263.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.gov.bc.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2022\/08\/Lightning-strokes-Aug-10-13-768x673.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.gov.bc.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2022\/08\/Lightning-strokes-Aug-10-13-1536x1346.png 1536w, https:\/\/blog.gov.bc.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2022\/08\/Lightning-strokes-Aug-10-13-2048x1794.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 615px) 100vw, 615px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:31px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Each of B.C.\u2019s six regional fire centres have reported high initial attack success following the last several days of lightning and higher winds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since Wednesday there have been 212 new wildfire starts across the province. Unsurprisingly, 80% of those starts were caused by lightning. The cause of 37 of these fires remains undetermined and five were caused by human activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-text-align-center\"><blockquote><p>69% of all of these fires are classified as Out, Under Control or Being Held.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This means the majority of these fires are extinguished, suppression efforts have ensured the wildfire will not spread any further or that the wildfire is not likely to spread beyond predetermined boundaries under prevailing conditions. <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/safety\/wildfire-status\/wildfire-response\/management-strategies\/stages-of-control\">Learn more about wildfire stages of control.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A concerted team effort is required to achieve this level of initial attack success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>236 initial attack firefighters are currently working across the province with an additional 128 on standby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.gov.bc.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2022\/08\/21-K21849-airtanker-action-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3147 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.gov.bc.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2022\/08\/21-K21849-airtanker-action-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.gov.bc.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2022\/08\/21-K21849-airtanker-action-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.gov.bc.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2022\/08\/21-K21849-airtanker-action-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.gov.bc.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2022\/08\/21-K21849-airtanker-action-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blog.gov.bc.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/786\/2022\/08\/21-K21849-airtanker-action.jpg 2016w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>74 helicopters and 33 air tankers are actively supporting suppression efforts on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the height of the lightning activity on August 11 and 12, our air tanker teams dropped 431,407 litres of retardant and 283,560 litres of suppressant on 18 initial attack objectives.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:37px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to this intentional focus on initial attack, sustained action crews remained busy across the province. Most of these crews are currently assigned to our active wildfires of note.
