KELOWNA \u2013 The BC Wildfire Service in partnership with the City of Kelowna, will be facilitating a BC Prescribed Fire Training Exchange (TREX) in Kelowna and surrounding areas from September 28 to October 9, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This event provides a structured, experiential learning opportunity focused on prescribed fire planning, ignition, holding and monitoring practices in a Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). TREX also supports cross-disciplinary collaboration between structural and wildland fire organizations and a broader community of fire practitioners, including academia, consultants, contractors and First Nations. It fosters a shared approach for safe and effective fire use where people, property and natural areas intersect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Below is a list of the six projects that have been identified as locations TREX may take place this fall, as well as the number of hectares that may be burnt at each location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The exact timing of these TREX projects will depend on weather and site conditions, but could begin as early as September 28, 2026. Burning will only proceed if conditions are suitable and allow for smoke dispersal during burn operations, though smoke may also linger in the following days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
TREX is a unique, cooperative, prescribed burning training model that provides hands on learning with a focus on local landscapes and values. In addition, general fuel management (including controlled burns), can help to reduce the severity of future wildfires and related threats to communities. Fire is a normal and natural process in many of B.C.\u2019s ecosystems. These projects are carefully planned and only go ahead at the right times and under the right conditions to ensure community and practitioner safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Smoke will be visible from the City of Kelowna and surrounding areas\/communities while these projects are taking place.
