SMITHERS \u2013 The debris management phase of a wildfire risk reduction project approximately 7 kilometres east of Smithers, adjacent to Old Babine Lake Road, began last week. This project is funded through the Community Resiliency Investment Program and is led by the Skeena Stikine Natural Resource District with support from BC Wildfire Service. The debris management will include a mix of pile burning and chipping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Completing this project will help reduce the wildfire hazard adjacent to properties along a section of Old Babine Lake Road. The work that is remaining for this project is cleaning up the debris piles created throughout the 10.9 hectare area. Skeena Stikine Natural Resource District staff with support from BC Wildfire Service, continue to monitor the project to ensure the operational treatment meets the fuel management prescription specifications and project objectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Burning will happen on any day that the venting forecast is good or fair, starting last week and continuing until conditions remain favourable to burn or all burning is complete. Smoke will likely be visible from adjacent properties and from other properties in the Driftwood area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
