More information about open burning can be found on our \u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/safety\/wildfire-status\/prevention\/fire-bans-and-restrictions\/open-burning?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=IB%3A-Check-burn-piles&amp;utm_source=Envoke-INFORMATION-BULLETIN&amp;utm_term=Information-Bulletin%3A-Public-reminded-to-be-cautious-with-op\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Open Fire and Safe Burning<\/a> webpage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u202fThe Southeast Fire Centre is also asking anyone who conducted a Category 2 or Category 3 pile burn over the fall and winter to check their burn site(s) and ensure they are fully extinguished.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u202f&nbsp;<strong>Why is this important?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In early spring, shortly after the snow has melted but before vegetation begins to green up, dead grass, leaves and deadfall branches can become more susceptible to burning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trees, especially conifers, have a low moisture content, which makes them especially vulnerable in early spring.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is possible for winter burn piles to \u2018overwinter\u2019 and burn deep into the ground, smouldering undetected until they re-emerge at the surface, potentially causing a wildfire.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u202fIf you intend to light a\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/safety\/wildfire-status\/prevention\/fire-bans-and-restrictions\/open-burning?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=IB%3A-Check-burn-piles&amp;utm_source=Envoke-INFORMATION-BULLETIN&amp;utm_term=Information-Bulletin%3A-Public-reminded-to-be-cautious-with-op\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Category 3 open fire<\/a>, you must first obtain a burn registration number. If a Category 3 fire has not been registered or if the registration number has expired, you may be found in violation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/safety\/wildfire-status\/about-bcws\/governance\/legislation-regulations?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=IB%3A-Check-burn-piles&amp;utm_source=Envoke-INFORMATION-BULLETIN&amp;utm_term=Information-Bulletin%3A-Public-reminded-to-be-cautious-with-op\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wildfire Act and Regulations<\/a>. Always check with local governments, as they may have bylaws that prohibit or restrict burning within their jurisdiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To report a wildfire, dial *5555 on a cell phone or call 1 800 663-5555 toll-free.
