{"id":18251,"date":"2025-03-04T08:43:55","date_gmt":"2025-03-04T16:43:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.gov.bc.ca\/bcwildfire\/?p=18251"},"modified":"2025-03-04T08:45:26","modified_gmt":"2025-03-04T16:45:26","slug":"prescribed-burn-planned-for-the-douglas-lake-area","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.gov.bc.ca\/bcwildfire\/prescribed-burn-planned-for-the-douglas-lake-area\/","title":{"rendered":"Prescribed burn planned for the Douglas Lake area"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>MERRITT \u2013 The BC Wildfire Service will be supporting the Upper Nicola Band in conducting a prescribed burn covering up to 100 hectares spread out between multiple treatment units on the Douglas Lake IR #3, about 40 kilometres northeast of Merritt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smoke may be visible from the Upper Nicola Band, Douglas Lake and surrounding areas and to motorists travelling along Highway 5A.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exact timing of this burn will depend on weather and site conditions, but it could begin as early as March 6, 2025, until the end of April 2025. Burning will only proceed if conditions are suitable and allow for smoke dispersal during burn operations, though smoke may also linger in the following day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key goals of this prescribed burn include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>reduce the build-up of dead grass and promote the growth of traditional foods<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>improving ungulate winter grazing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>removing forest fuels to reduce the long-term risk of wildfire<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>provide critical cross training opportunities for BC Wildfire Service personnel and members of the Upper Nicola Band Fire Department<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@culturalburningandprescrib3080\">Cultural Burning and Prescribed Fire Youtube<\/a> is an excellent resource to learn more about prescribed and cultural fire<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fire is a normal and natural process in many of B.C.\u2019s ecosystems. The BC Wildfire Service works regularly with a range of partners to undertake fuel management activities (including the use of controlled burns), to help reduce the severity of future wildfires and related threats to communities.
