Wildfire Rehabilitation pile burning planned in the West Chilcotin

WEST CHILCOTIN – The Cariboo Chilcotin Natural Resource District and the BC Wildfire Service will be burning approximately 400 piles of woody debris and unutilized log decks at multiple sites to facilitate wildfire rehabilitation objectives.

Burning for these projects will start as early as Oct. 31, 2024, and continue until approximately Nov. 30, 2024. These piles will be carefully prepared and monitored. Burning will occur only on days when site and weather conditions are favourable and allow for smoke to dissipate.

Piles will be burned at the following locations associated with 2023 wildfires:

  • Trumpeter Mtn. near Anahim Lake: approx. 150 piles
  • Anahim Peak near Anahim Lake: approx. 50 piles
  • Young Creek near Anahim Lake: approx. 150 piles
  • Hell Raving Creek near Bluff/Middle Lake: approx. 50 piles

Smoke may be visible from Highway 20 and areas around Anahim Lake, Nimpo Lake, and Tatla Lake. All efforts will continue to be made to utilize merchantable fiber to reduce emissions where feasible.

Exposure to smoke from wildfires or prescribed burning can irritate eyes and respiratory tracts and worsen pre-existing lung and heart conditions. If your area is impacted by smoke:

  • Run portable air cleaners with windows and doors closed. Both commercial and home-made units (https://rb.gy/90uh5s) can be effective if operated properly.
  • Reduce the length and intensity of outdoor activities.
  • Manage pre-existing conditions, and seek medical care if you have severe symptoms.
