The Prince George Fire Centre urges caution with open burning

PRINCE GEORGE – With warmer temperatures and drier conditions forecast across the Prince George Fire Centre’s southern zones, the public is reminded to exercise caution with any open burning this weekend. Category 2 and Category 3 prohibitions are expected to be implemented early next week in the Valemount, Prince George, Vanderhoof, and Fort St. James areas.

Every spring, there is a period of increased wildfire risk known as the “spring dip.” Shortly after snowmelt, but before vegetation begins to green up, dead grass, leaves, and deadfall branches become more susceptible to burning as days warm and conditions dry out. Many people assume spring is a soggy time of year and that it’s safe to burn without extra care — but the spring dip is a real and recurring risk. Forecasted warmer temperatures in the Prince George Fire Centre’s southern zones will amplify that risk this weekend.

If you are planning a campfire or burning debris this weekend:

  • Category 2 open fires for backyard burning should be no larger than 3 metres wide by 2 metres tall.
  • Check for fire prohibitions and with your local government to confirm burning is permitted in your area.
  • If it’s windy, don’t burn. Check your local forecast before lighting a fire.
  • Position your fire a safe distance from anything flammable.
  • Create a fuel break by scraping down to mineral soil to remove any flammable debris.
  • Never leave your fire unattended.
  • Have a hand tool readily available and enough water to extinguish the fire completely — you must have 8 litres on hand for a campfire, and a fire suppression system for a Category 2 open fire.
  • When you are finished, ensure the fire is fully out and ashes are cool to the touch.
