Smoke from pile burning visible in Kamloops area

KAMLOOPS – The BC Wildfire Service will be partnering with the Thompson Rivers Natural Resource District on a wildfire risk reduction project. The project is taking place at Greenstone Mountain, located approximately 20 kilometres southwest of Kamloops.

BC Wildfire Service crews will be working to burn approximately 50 piles, with the potential for additional piles as they get created. The purpose of this project is to reduce fuels around infrastructure as part of wildfire risk reduction. Activities such as pile burning help reduce wildfire hazards by reducing accumulations of fuels (e.g., dead wood or brush) on the landscape.

Smoke from piles may be visible as early as Sept. 24 until the end of November. Pile burning will only proceed if conditions are favourable. BC Wildfire Service personnel will carefully prepare, control and monitor these piles at all times. Smoke may be visible from Kamloops, Tobiano and Cherry Creek.

To report a wildfire, unattended campfire or open burning violation, please call 1 800 663-5555 toll-free, *5555 on a cell phone or submit a report directly through the BC Wildfire Service mobile app.
