Smoke from pile burning near Merritt Speedway will be visible to nearby communities

MERRITT – The BC Wildfire Service, in partnership with the Lower Nicola Fire Department, will be conducting a fuels management project near the Merritt Speedway located approximately 300 metres east of Mamet Lake Ranch Road.

Crews will be working to burn approximately 75 piles starting as early as Monday, Nov. 11, 2024, through to the end of November. This project is taking place for community protection purposes, as well as to clean up debris from the chainsaw training that took place in the area.

Smoke from piles may be visible to residents from the Community of Lower Nicola, the City of Merritt and along Highway 8. Pile burning will only proceed if conditions are favourable. BC Wildfire Service personnel will carefully prepare, control and monitor these piles at all times.

To report a wildfire, unattended campfire or open burning violation, please call 1 800 663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cell phone, or submit a report directly through the BC Wildfire Service mobile app.
