While wildfire activity remains below seasonal across the province, wildfire activity is increasing due to hot and dry weather and a series of lightning storms.
Fire cause is evenly split between human and lightning caused fires. More lightning is forecast in the coming days, and the BC Wildfire Service will closely monitor areas that are susceptible to ignition. Resource levels are adequate for current and anticipated conditions.
Indices to implement further prohibitions for open fire are being monitored.
We urge the public to be careful to prevent any human caused fires that could impact our response to lighting caused fires.
There is currently one wildfire of note in the province, the Nohomin Creek (K70580) wildfire, located in the Kamloops Fire Centre. Regular updates on this incident are provided on the Wildfires of Note webpage.
Weather forecast
Today will continue hot and dry in the southern part of the province, with cooler temperatures in the north. There is potential for some precipitation in the far northwest corner of B.C. We will be closely monitoring the Kamloops, Southeast and Prince George Fire Centres, where dry lightning is forecast.
Tomorrow, the risk of lightning risk continues for the same areas, with normal temperatures and showery conditions in the north, and above normal temperatures and a mix of cloud and sun in central and southern B.C. This pattern persists through the weekend, with a reduced possibility of lighting.
Early next week may see a change in the weather pattern, with cooler temperatures, variable cloud, scattered precipitation and an increased risk of lighting and gusty winds.
