Prescribed burn scheduled southwest of Merritt

MERRITT – The BC Wildfire Service, in partnership with the Coldwater Indian Band and Coldwater Fire Department, will be conducting a prescribed burn approximately 7.5 kilometres southwest of Merritt – Coldwater IR #1.

This prescribed burn will be up to 110 hectares in size and is expected to take place from March 11, 2024, until approximately mid-April 2024 or until grass becomes too green to burn.

Smoke may be visible from the City of Merritt and travelers along Highway 5, south of Merritt. Local weather and venting conditions will impact how much of the project is completed this spring.

The objectives of this project are to reduce the buildup of dead grass, promote growth of traditional food, aid in community protection in a Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) area and provide critical cross training opportunities with the Coldwater Fire Department, Coldwater Indian Band members and BC Wildfire Service personnel.
