TUMBLER RIDGE – The BC Wildfire service will be supporting the District of Tumbler Ridge in conducting a prescribed burn covering up to 2.6 hectares within the community of Tumbler Ridge.
The exact timing of this burn will depend on weather and site conditions, but it could begin as early as April 26, 2025. Burning will proceed if conditions are suitable and allow for smoke dispersal during burn operations, though smoke may also linger in the following days.
Key goals of this prescribed burn include:
- biodiversity enhancement
- reducing build-up of dead and combustible material
- removing forest fuels to reduce the long-term risk of wildfire
Beginning April 15, crews will be onsite preparing the area. This work includes establishing control lines, assessing burn conditions and addressing potential hazards, such as danger trees. These steps help ensure burn operations can be conducted safely and effectively.
Fire is a normal and natural process in many of B.C.’s ecosystems. The BC Wildfire Service works regularly with land managers to undertake fuel management activities (including the use of prescribed burns), to help achieve land management objectives, reduce the severity of future wildfires and increase ecosystem and wildfire resilience. These projects are carefully planned and only go ahead at the right times and under the right conditions to ensure community and practitioner safety.
