Dawson Creek – The BC Wildfire Service is planning to conduct a prescribed burn with Saulteau First Nations this weekend. Preparation for this burn may occur as early as Thursday, April 3; with the main burn planned for Saturday, April 5, if weather permits. The total burn area is approximately 100 hectares of grass on the Saulteau First Nations Reserve Lands.
Key goals for the planned burn include cross training with the Saulteau First Nations and BC Wildfire Service staff, as well as reducing the risk of grass fire in the area.
Smoke may be visible to Saulteau First Nations, Moberly Lake, Chetwynd, surrounding areas, and to travelers along Highways 97 and 29.
The prescribed burn will only proceed if conditions are favourable. BC Wildfire Service personnel will carefully prepare, control, and monitor the burn at all times.
Fire is a normal and natural process in many of B.C.’s ecosystems. The BC Wildfire Service works regularly with a range of partners to undertake fuel management activities (including the use of controlled burns), to help reduce the severity of future wildfires and related threats to communities. These projects are carefully planned and only go ahead at the right times and under the right conditions to ensure community and practitioner safety.
