WILLIAMS LAKE – The BC Wildfire Service, in collaboration with Williams Lake First Nation, will conduct an ecosystem restoration prescribed burn near Brunson Lake.

When and where

  • Burning is expected to begin as early as Monday, April 20, and may continue periodically until May 4
  • The prescribed burn will take place in approximately a 32 hectare area near Brunson Lake, and is located approximately seven kilometres north of Felker Lake and seven kilometres south of Williams Lake First Nation

What to expect

  • Smoke and flames will be visible to surrounding areas and to motorists travelling along Dog Creek Road, Chimney Lake Road and Highway 20
  • Crews will ignite ground fuels to remove combustible materials
  • Ignitions will only proceed with favourable weather and atmospheric venting allowing smoke to clear quickly
  • While burning is underway, traffic control may be on site to ensure the safety of public and firefighters, short delays may occur
  • Personnel will remain on site until there is no risk of the fire spreading beyond the perimeter and return daily until the fire is out

Smoke from within the perimeter of the burn may be visible up to 72 hours after ignition

Objectives of this prescribed burn

  • Reduce wildfire risk around Williams Lake and surrounding communities
  • Use fire to restore forest health to encourage a properly functioning ecosystem
  • Strengthen collaboration between Williams Lake First Nation and the Cariboo Fire Centre to grow capacity and knowledge for cultural and prescribed burning outside of emergency response situations
