Prescribed burn planned for Bigmouth

CASTLEGAR – The BC Wildfire Service will be supporting BC Timber Sales in conducting a prescribed burn covering up to 50 hectares, approximately 120 kilometres north of the community of Revelstoke and approximately 17 kilometres up the Bigmouth Forest Service Road.

The exact timing of this burn will depend on weather and site conditions, but it could begin as early as Saturday, June 8, 2024. Smoke may be visible from Mica Dam and Mica Creek.

Burning will proceed if conditions are suitable to achieve objectives and allow for smoke dispersal, though smoke may linger in the following days, particularly the morning after burn operations.

Key goals of this prescribed burn include:

  • Reduce build-up of dead and combustible material
  • Prepare the site for replanting
  • Reduce future risk of catastrophic wildfires

Fire is a normal and natural process in many of B.C.’s ecosystems. The BC Wildfire Service works regularly with land managers to undertake fuel management activities (including the use of prescribed burns), to help reduce the severity of future wildfires and related threats to communities.
