Pile burning scheduled in Vanderhoof and Fort St. James

VANDERHOOF/FORT ST. JAMES – The BC Wildfire Service will be partnering with the Districts of Vanderhoof and Fort St. James, BC Timber Sales (BCTS) and Nadleh Whut’en First Nation in several Wildfire Risk Reduction projects.

Together with partners, BC Wildfire crews will burn approximately 250 piles at the following sites:

  • Lily Lake (30)
  • Duncan FSR (8)
  • Domtar FSR (40)
  • Nadleh (3)
  • Frank Lake (10)
  • Corkscrew FSR (25)
  • Jean Marie FSR (40+)
  • Sutherland North (31)
  • Tsah Creek (15)
  • Dog Creek (20)

Burning for the project may start as early as Oct. 7, 2024, and continue until Dec. 20, 2024. Staff from the BC Wildfire Service will carefully prepare, control and monitor these fires. Smoke and/or flames may be visible from the Highway 16 and Highway 27 corridors and areas surrounding burn sites.

Individuals traveling near burn sites should exercise caution and be aware of crews working in the area. While none of these burns are anticipated to impact roadways, there is potential for smoke to impact visibility.

Activities such as pile burning help reduce wildfire hazards by reducing accumulations of fuels (e.g., dead wood or brush) on the landscape. The exact timing of the burns will depend on site, weather, venting and snow conditions. Burning will proceed only if conditions are favourable.

To report a wildfire, unattended campfire or open burning violation, call 1-800-663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cell phone or through the BC Wildfire Service mobile app.
