Pile burning planned near Bear Lake

PRINCE GEORGE – The BC Wildfire Service will be conducting pile burning in the Bear Lake area north of Crooked River Provincial Park and the City of Prince George. Approximately 200 piles will be burnt as part of an ongoing fuel management project in partnership with the Prince George Natural Resource District.

Smoke may be visible to residents in Bear Lake and to motorists travelling along Highway 97.

The purpose of this project is to help reduce wildfire hazards by reducing accumulations of fuels (e.g., tree limbs, woody debris, organic material) from previous fuels management work in the area.

The exact timing of this burn will depend on weather and site conditions, but it could begin as early as Tuesday, June 2, 2026 and will continue until June 30, 2026. Burning will proceed if conditions are suitable and allow for smoke dispersal during burn operations, though smoke may also linger in the following days.

Fire is a natural, normal process for many ecosystems in B.C. The BC Wildfire Service regularly works in partnership to strategize and conduct fuel management and/or ecological restoration projects through the application of planned, intentional fire on the land base.
