Crew History
The Lillooet Initial Attack program began in the 1970s. Its size evolved over the years until most recently in 2023 when the program increased to four crews of four firefighters.
In large part due to its position as a transition zone between the mighty Coast Mountains and the drier Interior Plateau, the Lillooet Fire Zone has a diverse range of terrain, weather and fuel types. Known as one of the hottest places in Canada, firefighting around Lillooet is known for its hot, steep and windy conditions with difficult access and challenging fire behaviour.
As a result, the focus of the Lillooet Initial Attack program is to excel in all metrics of wildland firefighting to meet the demands of the job in their home zone. A strong emphasis is placed on training and practice, as well as knowing the land and gaining familiarity with the remote corners of the Lillooet Zone. Underpinned by camaraderie, discipline and trust, the Lillooet Initial Attack program aims to inspire excellence through the preparation and fire suppression they conduct across the Lillooet Fire Zone and province.
