Forecasted winds expected to increase fire activity in the Chilcotin Fire Zone

CARIBOO – On Saturday, September 13, sustained winds of 15 kilometres per hour with gusts up to 30 kilometres per hour are expected from south-southwest in the western Chilcotin Fire Zone, and south-southeast in the eastern Chilcotin Fire Zone. Temperatures are expected to reach 26-28°C with relative humidity between 20-25%.

On Sunday, September 14, behind the cold frontal passage, wind gusts are anticipated to reach up to 40 kilometres per hour from the west-northwest. Temperatures on Sunday are expected to decrease to 16-19°C behind the cold front with relative humidity between 40-50%. Minimal precipitation is forecasted over the weekend. All Out of Control wildfires in the western parts of the Chilcotin and Quesnel Fire Zones are expected to experience an increase in fire activity and growth on Saturday and Sunday, fueled by winds, above seasonal temperatures, extended drought conditions and low relative humidity.

In this BC Wildfire Service video, Fire Behaviour Analyst, Eric Kopetski, describes the current conditions and wildfire behaviour in the western Chilcotin and Quesnel Fire Zones.
