Prince George – We’re anticipating a challenging three-day period for the Dawson Creek, Fort St. John and Fort Nelson fire zones. Between Friday, June 6, and Sunday, June 8, increasing temperatures and strong winds are expected to cause extreme fire behaviour throughout the region.
The arrival of a cold front on Friday is forecast to significantly increase wind speeds, gusting westerly up to 70 kilometres per hour locally. On Sunday into Monday, another wind event is expected to sweep through, with local westerly wind gusts once again reaching up to 70 kilometres per hour. Some regions may see thunderstorms develop on Sunday.
Following a period of warm, dry conditions, these strong winds are expected to drive extreme fire behaviour and growth towards the east on all wildfires within the Dawson Creek, Fort St. John and Fort Nelson fire zones. With these conditions, there is also an increased potential for new starts from overwintering fires, particularly in the Fort Nelson fire zone.
Significant wildfires impacted by this weather system include the Kiskatinaw River (G70422) wildfire, Summit Lake (G90413) wildfire and Pocket Knife Creek (G80352) wildfire.
