Current and forecast weather expected to increase fire activity

Fire activity this weekend will be influenced by increasingly hot temperatures, drying air and accelerated wind speeds in varying directions. The above seasonal temperatures, dry air and winds will further dry out fuels, increase where and how quickly wildfires spread, produce more aggressive fire behaviour and create challenging fire fighting conditions.

This afternoon an incoming southerly flow is expected to trigger thunder cell formation in the southern third of B.C. which is expected to produce dry lightning and strong localized winds. Smoke impacts are expected to build today and throughout the weekend from wildfires in the province as well as fires burning in the U.S.A. On Saturday, hot and dry conditions spread northward and convective activity will be concentrated in the southeast corner of B.C. Sunday forecasts are predicting a cold front descending from the north with an increase in gusty winds and thundershowers from the centre of the province southward. This pattern continues next week, with generally hot and dry conditions and the addition of scattered thundershowers.

We are prepared to respond to new wildfires and increased wildfire activity. Wildfire personnel are constantly monitoring and assessing conditions, and resources are stationed and deployed in alignment with heightened risk.

Please adhere to all fire bans and restrictions in your area, including those enforced by your regional district or local authority.
