BC Wildfire Service App Updates

The BC Wildfire Service web and mobile app allow the public to receive timely and accurate information regarding wildfires in the province. The app has recently undergone redevelopment with significant updates in the last year. It is now performing consistently with mobile, tablet and desktop devices for the best user experience.

For near-real time wildfire information, download the BC Wildfire Service mobile app. The app updates every five minutes and provides useful information on wildfire statistics, the current wildfire situation, bans and restrictions and more.

To assist in learning the app, an app reference guide was created. Consisting of “how to” and step-by-step videos, this resource is a helpful tool for navigating the new program.

The current developmental improvements have equipped BC Wildfire Service mobile app with a comprehensive “Report a Fire” function to allow the public to easily report what they see. The public is able to call or go through a 15 minute process to report to the Provincial Wildfire Reporting Centre.

  • New this year, users can report fires without cell coverage and the reports will automatically submit once service returns. Additionally, on most devices, users will be able to add photos to the report, so our operations teams have a better understanding of the resources required for the situation.
  • The reporting process now utilizes a compass, GPS and a map to allow for the precise location of the fire.

Through the program, users are prompted to:

  • Estimate the size of the fire,
  • Identify the colour of the smoke,
  • Acknowledge if there are any signs of response,
  • Report if there are visible flames and what appears to be burning,
  • Identify if there is anything at risk, and
  • Report if the fire appears to be spreading.

The BC Wildfire Service web and mobile app highlight preparedness tools for the public to utilize to prepare for the upcoming wildfire season. The app will effectively prepare the public for potential emergency situations, by providing access to clear and reliable information.
