Area restriction in effect for the Dry Creek wildfire



CASTLEGAR – The BC Wildfire Service continues to respond to the Dry Creek wildfire (N41079) located in the Regional District of Central Kootenay, about 2.5 kilometres west of the Shelter Bay ferry terminal and about 35 kilometres south of the City of Revelstoke. The size is estimated to be 109 hectares.

In the interest of public and responder safety, an area restriction is now in effect in the vicinity of the Dry Creek wildfire:

  • Commencing at the junction of Shelter Bay FSR and Highway 23-S (50° 38.855′, -117° 55.992′)
  • following the west side of Shelter Bay FSR to the crossing of an intermittent creek (50° 35.822′, -117° 57.216′),
  • roughly following the height of land northwest to the junction of Killeen FSR and Killeen Branch 17 FSR (50° 37.526′, -118° 1.077′).
  • Continuing along the height of land, crossing Dry Creek Road (50° 38.049′. -118° 2.272′),
  • connecting to the end of Branch 21.12A FSR (50° 42.682′, -118° 5.173′),
  • continuing along the descending ridge and tying into the end of K6ZU.01 FSR (50° 45.636′, -118° 5.097′),
  • following due east to the west edge of Vigue FSR right-of-way south (50° 45.733′, -118° 2.846′) and following the west edge of Vigue FSR right-of-way south,
  • continuing on the west edge as Vigue FSR right-of-way south connects with Hwy 23-S 50° 43.506′, -118° 0.640′),
  • then following Hwy 23-S back to point of commencement (50° 38.855′, -117° 55.992′).

*Note:

  • Shelter Bay Provincial Park is not included in the area restriction.
  • The Shelter Bay Forest Service Road (FSR) is included in the area restriction, impacting access to the Eagle Bay rec site.
  • The Shelter Bay ferry remains open. Conditions can change rapidly, check DriveBC.ca for updates on road closures and conditions before traveling.

Under this Order and section 11(2) of the Wildfire Act, a person must not remain in or enter the restricted area, unless the person:

  1. first receives written authorization of an official designated for the purposes of the Wildfire Act, or
  2. enters the area only in the course of:
    (a) travelling to or from his or her primary residence, that is not under an evacuation order;
    (b) using a highway as defined in the Transportation Act;
    (c) travelling as a person acting in an official capacity as defined in s.56 of the Wildfire Act; or
    (d) travelling for the purpose of supporting wildfire suppression or enforcement patrol activities.
