Area Restriction extension for the McDougall Creek wildfire



KAMLOOPS – The BC Wildfire Service has implemented an Area Restriction Order within the vicinity of the McDougall Creek wildfire (K52767), located adjacent to West Kelowna. This Order takes effect at 12 p.m.(noon) Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) on Sept. 15, 2023, and remains in force until the earlier of 12 p.m. (noon) PDT on Oct. 3, 2023, or until the Order is rescinded.

This area restriction reflects the need to protect public and BC Wildfire Service personnel safety in areas where fire suppression activities are taking place.

Under this Order and section 11(2) of the Wildfire Act, a person must not remain in or enter the restricted area unless the person:

  1. Travelling as a person acting in an official capacity;
  2. Travelling for the purpose of supporting wildfire suppression activities;
  3. Travelling to or from his or her principal residence, that is not under an evacuation order;
  4. Travelling to or from his or her private or leased property for the purposes of accessing his or her secondary residence or recreational property, that is not under an evacuation order;
  5. Using a highway as defined in the Highway Act; or
  6. Engaging and/or participating in agricultural activities pertaining to livestock or agriculture management on Crown Range, Crown Grazing Lease, private or leased property.

This Order applies to Crown land within the geographic boundaries described below and as outlined in the heavy black dashed and shaded grey line on the attached map here.

East Boundary: Commencing at Point 1 (50° 8.033′, -119° 30.855′), at the junction of Westside Road and Shorts Creek, follow Westside Road south to the Bear Creek Provincial Park boundary on the east side of Westside Road. Travel along the Bear Creek Provincial Park boundary east, to the natural shoreline of Okanagan Lake, then continue in a south and westerly direction along the Bear Creek Provincial Park boundary to the intersection with Westside Road. Follow Westside Road south to the City of West Kelowna Municipal boundary (Point 2: 49° 55.382′, -119° 31.316′).

South Boundary: Commencing at Point 2, follow the West Kelowna Municipal boundary southwest to Glenrosa Rd (Point 3: 49° 51.674′, -119° 42.469′).

West Boundary: Commencing at Point 3, travel north along Glenrosa Rd approximately 3.2 km to Jackpine FSR (7720 04). Then follow Jackpine FSR north to Bear FSR (7720 01). Continue onto Bear FSR and travel northeast to the junction with road R06642 999A (Point 4: 50° 0.130′, -119° 39.341′). Then take a bearing of 356.89° and travel north for 7.27 km to the junction of Esperon FSR (7720.02) and Terrace Lookout FSR (7720 03) (Point 5: 50° 4.037′, -119° 39.665′). Follow Esperon FSR north to the junction with Stuart FSR (7720 07) then travel north on the Stuart FSR to the junction with Stuart 100 Road (7720 17) (Point 6: 50° 6.313′, -119° 41.276′). Take a bearing of 17.68° and travel northeast for 4.88 km to the confluence of Young Creek at Shorts Creek (Point 7: 50° 8.822′, -119° 40.032′).

North Boundary: Commencing at Point 7, travel east along Shorts Creek back to Westside Road at Point 1.

This Order takes effect at 12:00 (noon) Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) on September 15, 2023, and remains in force until the earlier of 12:00 (noon) PDT on October 3, 2023 or until the Order is rescinded.

The BC Wildfire Service would like to remind the public that while access to private residences are permitted, the public must remain out of active fire areas. Interference in these areas has a direct impact on operations and poses a safety risk to both the individual and to BC Wildfire Service personnel.

Failure to comply with Section 11 restricted area requirements may result in a violation ticket of $1,150.
