Open Fire Prohibitions Rescinded in Prince George Fire Centre

PRINCE GEORGE – Effective at 12:00 (noon) PDT on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, Category 2 and Category 3 open burning prohibitions are rescinded in the Prince George Fire Centre.

The prohibition on the following activities and the use of the following equipment, materials and substances will also be rescinded:

  • Fireworks
  • Air curtain burners
  • Sky lanterns
  • Burn barrels or burn cages of any size or description
  • Binary exploding targets

More information on open burning is available on the BC Wildfire Service website. Local prohibitions may be in effect. Check with local government authorities for restrictions before lighting any fire.

The BC Wildfire Service also reminds the public that anyone lighting a Category 3 fire must first obtain a burn registration number. Registration numbers are available by calling 1-888-797-1717 or emailing hpr.1800@gov.bc.ca. If you are unsure whether you need to register your burn, please visit the BC Wildfire Service website for more information.

Campfires that are a half-metre high by a half-metre wide (or smaller) and the use of cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes remain permitted. A poster outlining campfire regulations is available online.

Anyone found in contravention of an open-burning prohibition or campfire regulation may be issued a violation ticket for $1,150, may be required to pay an administrative penalty of up to $10,000 or, if convicted in court, may be fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.

To report a wildfire, unattended campfire or open burning violation, call 1-800-663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cell phone or through the BC Wildfire Service mobile app.
