Smoke from pile burning near Summerland will be visible to nearby communities

SUMMERLAND – The BC Wildfire Service will be supporting the Okanagan Shuswap Natural Resource District in conducting a fuel management project located approximately 10 kilometres west of Summerland.

Key goals of this fuel management project include:

  • helping to maintain and upkeep access along range fence line
  • removing forest fuels to reduce the long-term risk of wildfire

BC Wildfire Service crews will be working to burn approximately 600 piles. The exact timing of this burn will depend on weather and site conditions, but it could begin as early as Oct 8, 2026. Burning will proceed if conditions are suitable and allow for smoke dispersal during burn operations, though smoke may also linger in the following days.

Smoke may be visible from Apex Mountain Resort, Keremeos, Okanagan Falls, Penticton, West Kelowna, Kelowna, Summerland and surrounding areas, and to motorists travelling along Highway 97C.

To report a wildfire, unattended campfire, or open burning violation, call 1 800 663-5555 tollfree or *5555 on a cell phone or through the BC Wildfire Service mobile app. For the latest information on current wildfire activity, burning restrictions, road closures and air-quality advisories, visit: http://www.bcwildfire.ca
