To limit the risk of wildfires and address public safety concerns, the BC Wildfire Service often makes various orders to prohibit open fire (commonly known as “fire bans” or “prohibitions”).
In 2025, BC Wildfire Service prohibitions will include more specific language to clearly indicate where they do or do not apply.
BC Wildfire Service prohibitions are always posted on the BC Wildfire Service website. To determine whether a prohibition applies to your location, check the BC Wildfire Service fire prohibitions and restrictions webpage as well as with your local authority, municipality, regional district or improvement district.
In general, BC Wildfire Service prohibitions do not apply within municipal boundaries, with some exceptions. Municipalities often follow BC Wildfire Service prohibitions or impose different prohibitions that are more suitable to their circumstances.
The authority to prohibit open fires and other activities is an important part of many bylaws and allows local governments to be responsive to the conditions and unique risk factors within their specific location.
BC Wildfire Service prohibitions apply within BC Parks. Title land, federal reserve land and other areas managed by Indigenous governments may have additional requirements.
